Origin and history

The Maison du Docteur Gachet, located in Auvers-sur-Oise in Val-d的Oise, was acquired in 1872 by Paul Gachet, a doctor, collector of art and friend of Impressionist painters. The latter, known for his artistic pseudonym Paul van Ryssel, welcomed artists such as Camille Pissarro and Paul Cézanne, who came to work there and to replenish themselves. The house became a meeting place for painters attracted by the landscapes of the Oise Valley, then in full artistic effervescence.

In May 1890 Vincent van Gogh, recommended by his brother Théo, arrived in Auvers-sur-Oise to undergo therapy under the supervision of Dr Gachet. During his last 70 days, the Dutch painter made more than 70 paintings, some of which represent the house and its surroundings. The property, with its troglodytic commons dug in the limestone cliff, embodies the bucolic and inspiring setting that marked the end of Van Gogh's life.

Ranked a historic monument in 1991, the house was restored by the Val-d'Oise Departmental Council before being opened to the public in 2003, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Van Gogh's birth. Today, it offers a tangible testimony to the relationship between the doctor and the artist, as well as to the Impressionist heritage of Auvers-sur-Oise, a village that has become a high place for cultural tourism in Île-de-France.

The site is part of a remarkable geological landscape, marked by Lutetian limestone cliffs and underground quarries, typical of the French Vexin. These natural characteristics, combined with the proximity of the Oise, shaped the visual identity of the village, immortalized by the painters. The house, with its garden and outbuildings, also illustrates 19th century rural architecture, preserved despite the gradual urbanization of the town.

Beyond its connection with Van Gogh, the residence evokes the medical and social history of the period: Dr Gachet, an eclectic figure, treated both local inhabitants and Parisian artists in search of rest. His role as patron and friend of painters makes him a key actor in the Impressionist scene, alongside collectors like Eugene Murer, another personality linked to Auvers.

Today, the House of Doctor Gachet is part of a tourist trail including the Ravoux Inn, where Van Gogh died, and the cemetery where he rests alongside his brother Theo. These places, combined with the landscapes painted by Impressionists, attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, making Auvers-sur-Oise a symbol of French artistic and historical heritage.

Future

The property is open to the public in spring 2003 on the occasion of the one hundred and fifty-fifth anniversary of Van Gogh's birth.
