Origin and history
The Priory of the Templars of Chanonat, classified as a Historic Monument in 1926, is a 15th century commandory organized around an inner courtyard surrounded by buildings. Its entrance, in basket handle, is surmounted by a trilobed lintel mâchicoulis and a panel of coats of arms in bas-relief framed by a carved bandeau. To the right, a skunk, a square tower with floors, and a chimney sheath on crows mark the southwest corner. These elements, although contemporary, were not all erected simultaneously.
The south front, bordered by two towers connected by a slender courtine, includes sled windows and a stair turret. The chapel, in return for square, features a gable with a broken arch door decorated with a bas-relief, while a niche with dais and cul-de-lampe decorates its southwest angle. Inside, primitive ground chimneys remain. The protected elements include the west façade, towers, courtine, and chapel, bounded by a plan annexed to the classification order.
The location of Chanonat (Puy-de-Dôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes) places this site in a late medieval rural context, where the Templar Commanderies played a role both religious, military and economic. The presence of defensive devices (mâchicoulis, murderers) and residential elements (pathways, stairs) reflects this duality. The map accuracy of the site is considered "passable" (note 5/10), and its official address is 63450 Chanonat.
