Origin and history
The church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Balan, located in the Ain department, finds its origins in the 11th century. It has undergone many changes over the centuries, reflecting the architectural and religious evolutions of the region. The first written mention of the building dates back to 1187, indicating its seniority and local importance from the Middle Ages.
In 1206, the archbishop of Lyon Renaud II de Forez acquired land at Balan, suggesting an increasing influence of the archdiocese on the parish and church. The latter, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, saw the addition of a South chapel dedicated to Notre-Dame de Grace in 1613, while the North chapel was built in the seventeenth century.
From the 19th century, the church's history was marked by major restoration campaigns. In 1863, the choir was reconstructed and the porch renovated, while the bell tower was erected in 1869. In the 20th century, work continued with the restoration of the choir in 1967 and that of the nave in 1970, ensuring the preservation of this religious heritage.
A path of the cross, visible inside, bears witness to the spiritual vocation of the building, always assigned to Catholic worship. Today, the church depends on the diocese of Belley-Ars, within the Archdiocese of Lyon, and remains a gathering place for the parish community of Montluel.
The church's numerous architectural changes illustrate its adaptation to the liturgical needs and aesthetic tastes of different eras. Its history also reflects the close links between the parish of Balan and the religious institutions of Lyon, particularly through the influence of the archdiocese.
Finally, the successive restorations, carried out until the twentieth century, underline the commitment of the faithful and local authorities to the preservation of this monument, a symbol of the historical and spiritual heritage of the region.
