Origin and history

The church of St. Didier of Asfeld, located in the Ardennes, was rebuilt around 1680 by Jean-Jacques de Mesmes, Count of Avaux, ambassador and signatory of the Treaty of Nijmegen. Passionate about Italian Baroque art, he entrusted the project to the Dominican brother François Romain, known for his innovative technical solutions, such as those applied at the Pont Royal in Paris. The building adopts a bold form inspired by the viola de gamba, symbolizing the elevation of prayers, with a curvilinear structure and a rotunda evoking Roman antiquity.

The construction combines bricks and columns (138 in total), a regional rarity, with a peristyle to colonnade, an adorned campanile, and chapels served by galleries. Inside is a 1900 organ and an icon offered by painter Rostislas Loukin. Ranked a historic monument in 1913, the church benefited from major restorations between 1994-2001 (roof, frame) and 2008-2009 (inner walls).

The bell tower houses three bells melted in 1922 by Alexandre Chambon, named Gabrielle-Lucienne, Marie-Louise Octavie and Lucie-Françoise. Their ringing, always on the fly, beats local life. The building, a communal property, embodies the architectural audacity of the 17th century and the enlightened patronage of the Earl of Avaux, merging sacred art, technical innovation and classical heritage.
