Origin and history
The church of Saint-Julien d'Ayrinhac, located in Bertholène in the department of Aveyron (Occitanie region), is a former priory whose history dates back to the 11th and 16th centuries. It was attached to the Domerie d'Aubrac, a medieval religious institution that operated hospital and monastic establishments in the region. The building, which has been listed as historic monuments since November 7, 2007, features a hybrid architecture, combining Romanesque and Renaissance elements.
The church consists of a single vaulted nave in a broken cradle, extended by a quadrangular choir. Four side chapels accompany it, one of which, of Romanesque origin (XI century), was preserved during the expansion of the building. This hexagonal chapel, supported by columns with rudimentary capitals, is surmounted by an oval dome. The front door, dated 1537, bears witness to the transformations carried out in the sixteenth century. A bell tower-wall dominates the whole, typical of local religious architecture.
The church of Ayrinhac illustrates the evolution of architectural and religious practices between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Its connection to the Domerie d'Aubrac underlines its importance in the network of monastic and hospital establishments in the region. The destruction of the primitive choir during enlargement reflects the changing liturgical and community needs over the centuries.
