Saint Peter's Abbey Church : list by 1840
Origin and history
The Abbey Church of Saint-Pierre de Ferrières-en-Gâtinais, built in the 16th century, has notable architectural features. Its portal, adorned with capitals and archvolts, reflects the stylistic influence of the Cathedral of Sens, while the nave, with small gem columns, and the dome on warheads resting on half-cylinder columns, bear witness to a refined technical know-how. The structures, dating from the 15th century, were rebuilt after a fire in 1426, illustrating the vicissitudes of the monument over the centuries.
The wall paintings, partially made in the 16th century, add an artistic dimension to the building. As a Historical Monument since 1840, the Saint-Pierre Abbey Church is now owned by the commune of Ferrières-en-Gâtinais. Its architecture, combining Gothic heritage and Renaissance innovations, makes it a remarkable example of the religious heritage of the Centre-Val de Loire region.
The location of the church, although documented (15 Rue de l'Église, 45210 Ferrières-en-Gâtinais), remains approximate according to the available sources, with cartographic accuracy deemed mediocre. Despite this, its early classification and its architectural peculiarities make it a monument of major interest for the study of sacred art in France at the crossroads between the Middle Ages and the modern era.
