Origin and history
The Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur d'Aubure Church is a historic monument located in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region. Built in 1813, it replaces an earlier building dated about 1720. Its architecture is distinguished by a moellonic nave, an octagonal sandstone bell tower, and a semicircular apse. The sculpted details, such as Jehovah's Eye on the front of the front door, as well as the twined bays and ground chambranles, reflect a mixture of classic and local styles.
The bell tower, probably enhanced around 1859, dominates the building with its large curved bays and its abat-sons. Inside, the nave and choir, capped and decorated with a gorge, house a corbelled organ stand. Two sacristies, one added in the mid-19th century, complete the whole. The adjacent cemetery, surrounded by a stone wall, highlights the central role of the church in the community life of Aubure. The building, listed in the inventory of historical monuments in 1935, bears witness to the architectural and religious evolution of this Alsatian region.
The entrance door, in sandstone, is surmounted by a sculpted pediment representing Jehovah's Eye, a prominent religious symbol. The side windows, in full hanger with ground chambranles, as well as the sandstone cornice, add to the sober elegance of the building. The northern sacristy, arched and decorated with carved balusters, illustrates the attention paid to interior details. The high altar, also inscribed in 1935, is a remarkable heritage element of this church, still owned by the municipality of Aubure.
