Origin and history

The church Saint-Lubin de Couvrelles, located in the department of Aisne in the Hauts-de-France region, is a religious building whose construction extends mainly to the 13th century, although remains of the 12th century remain at the base of the pillars of the choir. Its architecture reflects a coherent reconstruction, with a nave of four spans flanked by downsides, extended by a choir with a flat bedside. The pillars, very marked, as well as the foothills of the western facade and the bell tower, bear witness to a robust structure typical of the transition between Romanesque and Gothic styles.

Ranked a historic monument in 1922, the church suffered damage during the withdrawal of the German army in August 1918. Its restoration, initiated in the same year under the direction of architect Lucien Sallez, concerned the western facade, the bell tower, the north side and the choir between 1922 and 1924. Two new bells were installed there in 1924. The building also benefited from earlier restorations, financed by local families such as the Rolin d'Ivry in the late 19th century and the Countess du Manoir in the early 20th century.

Under the Old Regime, the parish of Couvrelles depended on the diocese of Soissons, with a division of tithes between the Hôtel-Dieu de Soissons, the cathedral chapter and the local parish priest. This historical context illustrates the religious and social importance of the church in medieval and modern community life. The western portal, topped by a mess, and the staircase leading to the triforium of the facade, are notable architectural elements, reflecting the evolution of the construction techniques and liturgical needs of the period.
