Origin and history

The church Sainte-Monégonde is a religious building located in the commune of Orphin in the department of Yvelines in Île-de-France. It was built largely in the first quarter of the sixteenth century, with a structure dated 1512. The parish was erected as early as the 11th century, reflecting its seniority in the region. The bell tower, an emblematic element of the building, was listed as a historic monument on October 29, 1968.

The church's stained glass windows, dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, are another major point of interest. Eight glass windows were created by Maison Lorin de Chartres, some by Charles Lorin (1866-1940). These stained glass windows represent religious figures such as Saint Monégonde, Saint Sebastian, Saint Peter, Saint Paul, or Saint Geneviève of Paris. Four other glass windows, signed Acézat and dated 1913, complete this artistic ensemble.

The church has undergone several changes over the centuries, including the restoration of the roofing panel between 1870 and 1880, as well as the movement of the cemetery in 1863. A bell dating from 1556 is also mentioned, highlighting the historical richness of this monument. Today, the church of Sainte-Monégonde remains an emblematic place of the commune of Orphin, open to the visit and managed by the municipality.
