Origin and history

Saint-Parres de Saint-Parres-aux-Tertres Church, located in the Aube department in the Grand Est region, is a religious building built in the 1st quarter of the 16th century. It is distinguished by its rectangular plane, its apse with five protruding sections, and a nave with five fully arched spans. A square tower, the construction of which began on May 9, 1557, is shifted from the façade, adding an architectural singularity to the whole. The church was the seat of a parish dependent on the bishop, including several hamlets such as Bouranton and Villechétif, with chapels. His parish priest bore the exceptional title of cardinal priest, stressing his local ecclesiastical importance.

The church furniture bears witness to a rich artistic heritage. There are 16th-century statues in limestone or polychrome oak, representing religious figures such as Saint Parres (Sant Patrocle), Saint Maure, Saint Augustine, or a Virgin to the Child attributed to the school of Champagne. The historical stratification of the site is revealed by a bentier and 17th-century baptismal fonts, as well as a series of ten third-century limestone sarcophagi. These elements, combined with its classification as a historical monument in 1942, make the church an emblematic place for the religious and funerary heritage of Champagne.

The building also illustrates the medieval and modern parish organization in Champagne. At the time of its construction, churches like Saint-Parres served as a spiritual, administrative and social centre for surrounding rural communities. The presence of Merovingian sarcophagi suggests an ancient occupation of the site, while the term dedicated to Saint Parres — the local form of Saint Patrocle, martyr of the 6th century — may indicate early Christianization. The 1942 ranking, which took place during the Second World War, underlines the desire to preserve this heritage despite the upheavals of the time.
