Origin and history
The church of Sainte-Radegonde de La Bruffière was entirely rebuilt in 1886 by architect Ménard, in a style combining Italian and Byzantine influences. The building is distinguished by its vaulted nave of domes on low pendants, its collaterals, its transept and its apse choir. This bold architectural party is accompanied by a rich interior decoration, including paintings and mosaics, as well as all its original furniture, preserved until today.
Classified as a historical monument, the church is subject to total protection by decree of 13 September 2007, covering the entire building (cadastre AC 191). Its location, at 9 Rue de Nantes in La Bruffière (Vendée), makes it a landmark in the local urban landscape. The architect Ménard, the project manager, left a unique stylistic imprint, combining decorative exuberance and references to Mediterranean or Eastern models, rare in the region.
The accuracy of its geographic location is estimated as "passible" (note 5/10), based on available data. Owned by the commune, the church illustrates the importance of religious reconstructions in the 19th century, when municipalities invested heavily in buildings that symbolized modernity and prestige. Its eclectic architecture also reflects the artistic currents of the era, combining revivalism and technical innovations, such as the use of pendants to support domes.
