Origin and history

The church of Saint-André de Soulom, built in the 12th century, is a typical example of a fortified Romanesque church, characteristic of the Pyrenees. Its barlong wall, with a mâchicoulis arched gallery, bears witness to defensive adaptations against Moorish invasions. The nave, vaulted in cradle, and the cul-de-four apse reflect medieval architectural techniques, while the bell tower, added later, incorporates defensive elements such as crows supporting mâchicoulis.

In the 16th century, the church retained its central role in the community life of Soulom, the village of Lavedan, a historic province of Bigorre in Gascony. Major changes occurred at the end of the 19th century, when a local priest drilled large arcades and built two collateral naves to enlarge the building. These transformations altered its original aspect, but met the needs of a growing rural population, then oriented towards agriculture, livestock, and the exploitation of local resources such as copper mines, mentioned in 1826.

Ranked a historic monument in 1942, the church also illustrates the region's hydropower history, with the close presence of a power station on the river Pau. Its heritage inscription underlines its importance in the cultural landscape of the Hautes-Pyrénées, between medieval heritage and modern adaptations. The village of Soulom, with its 293 inhabitants in 2023, perpetuates this heritage in the heart of a valley marked by gaves and gasconic traditions, as evidenced by its toponym Occitan Solon, meaning "place sheltered from the sun".
