Origin and history
The Saint-Baudile church of Brou-sur-Chantereine, located in Seine-et-Marne, is an 18th-century religious building. Built between 1740 and 1742 by Paul-Esprit Feydeau de Brou, then minister and keeper of the seals of Louis XV, it embodies the classical architecture of the era. Her Latin cross plan, her semi-circular bedside and her south portal framed with pilasters reflect the aesthetic cannons of the Enlightenment. The bell tower, with an imperial roof, recalls the bell towers and houses a 1748 bronze bell, spared by the Revolution.
The façade of the church has undergone a recent transformation: in 1998, a ceramic fresco, offered by artisans from Collazzone (Italian twin town), was placed there. This decoration was removed in 2014 during a work, replaced by a cross. The interior houses stained glass windows dated 1946, while commemorative plaques remind local victims of the two world wars, including the 27 deaths of the First War (10 per cent of the population) and the 58 victims of the Second.
The church is attached to the diocese of Meaux and is part of the missionary pole of Chelles. His story is also related to Anne de Clermont Gessau, abbesse de Chelles from 1735 to 1790, whose coats of arms appear on the bell alongside those of Feydeau de Brou. This monument thus illustrates both religious heritage, local history and transalpine cultural exchanges.
