Origin and history
The church Sainte-Madeleine de Brienne is a religious building located in the department of Saône-et-Loire, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. It was rebuilt between 1886 and 1889 according to the plans of architect Mr Ferret, replacing an earlier building. The latter housed a chapel dedicated to Notre-Dame de Consolation, founded in 1428 by Louis de La Palud, abbot of Tournus and cardinal of Varambon, who set up a sculpted group there today classified as historical monuments.
The current architecture consists of a unique nave, a vaulted choir span and a cul-de-four apse. The high altar, in Prety pink marble, dates from the late eighteenth century. The building, still dedicated to Catholic worship, depends on the diocese of Autun and the parish of Saint-Jean-Baptiste-en-Bresse.
The sculpted group Notre-Dame de Consolation, classified in 1910, bears witness to the historical legacy of Louis de La Palud. This prelate, who died in 1451, had enriched the endowment of the chapel by will, lastingly marking the history of the church. Today, the building remains an active place of worship, integrated with the local religious heritage.
