Origin and history
The Saint-Martin d'Ambenay church, located in the Eure department in Normandy, finds its origins in the Romanesque period, between the 11th and 12th centuries. Although its initial structure dates back to this period, the present building retains characteristic elements of the 15th century, including its iconic bell tower.
The church bell tower, erected in the 15th century, was officially listed as historical monuments on 17 April 1926. This partial protection highlights its architectural and heritage importance, while emphasizing its role in local history. The building today belongs to the municipality of Ambenay.
The Saint-Martin church illustrates the architectural evolution of places of worship in Normandy, moving from a primitive Romanesque style to late Gothic additions. Its location in the heart of the village reflects its central role in community and religious life since the Middle Ages.
