Origin and history
The church of Saint-Martin de Cordesse, located in the department of Saône-et-Loire in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is a religious building built between the 15th and 16th centuries. It is distinguished by its architecture combining a simple nave covered with a wooden frame and a vaulted polygonal choir, typical of the churches of this period. Its partly classified furniture reflects different eras, with elements dating from the 16th century and significant additions to the 18th century.
The church was listed as historic monuments by an order of 9 November 1926, recognizing its heritage value. A major renovation campaign was carried out in the 20th century, with an official inauguration on 20 June 1991. This monument, still dedicated to the Catholic cult, is now part of the Diocese of Autun and the parish of Notre-Dame-du-Morvan, demonstrating its religious continuity since its construction.
The interior furniture, installed or commissioned by local figures such as Abbé Jacques Guillemardet (curé de Cordesse from 1743), includes remarkable pieces: a 16th century official stall, a 1766 pulpit to be preached, and an 18th century wrought iron communion grid. These elements, classified or listed in the Historic Monuments between 1923 and 1985, illustrate the artistic and liturgical evolution of the building.
The marble altar, acquired in 1836, and the benches of the 18th century faithful complete a furniture complex that combines medieval heritage and modern transformations. The church property belongs to the municipality of Cordesse, and its maintenance reflects the local commitment to preserve this architectural and spiritual heritage. The building remains an active place of worship, rooted in the religious and cultural life of the region.
