The bell tower (Box B 369): inscription by order of 22 March 1983
Origin and history
The church of Saint Martin de La Buisse is a 12th-century religious building in the municipality of La Buisse, Isère (38). This monument, typical of the Romanesque architecture of the region, bears witness to the importance of parish churches in the social and spiritual organization of medieval villages. Its bell tower, the only protected element, was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 22 March 1983, highlighting its heritage value.
In the 12th century, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, then integrated into the Holy Roman Empire and then into the Kingdom of France, was marked by a rural life organized around the parishes. Churches like Saint Martin served as places of worship, but also as a gathering point for local communities. Their construction often reflected local resources and know-how, while playing a central role in the transmission of Christian traditions.
The partial protection of this monument (the bell tower) illustrates contemporary efforts to preserve this medieval heritage, despite historical sources sometimes limited in its detailed history.
