Origin and history

The Saint-Martin church of Vallangoujard, located in the Val-d-Oise in Île-de-France, is a religious building whose oldest parts date back to the second half of the 12th century. The square choir, with its capitals close to the Romanesque style, and the two-span nave, dated from the early 13th century, illustrate a transition between Romanesque and primitive Gothic styles. The absence of lowlands in the north and the characteristic foothills suggest an ambitious architectural project, perhaps incomplete for economic reasons. The western gate, decorated with carved columns and capitals, as well as the oculi as high windows, testify to a careful aesthetic research despite limited means.

Ranked a historic monument in 1915 (excluding the south side and the sacristy, rebuilt in the 18th century), the church preserves remarkable elements such as the dogive vaults of the nave and the base of the bell tower, assimilated to a third span. The choir's capitals, partially reworked, combine Romanesque and Gothic motifs, while the choir's modern murals add a symbolic dimension (pelican, angels). The history of the building remains partially enigmatic in the absence of archival documents, but its role in the parish, attached to the abbey Saint-Martin of Pontoise under the Ancien Régime, then integrated into the diocese of Pontoise in 1966, reflects its local anchor.

The furniture, partly dispersed (museum of the French Vexin, departmental reserves), includes rooms classified as a 14th century Virgin with Child or a bell of 1584 from the former church of Mézières, a commune absorbed by Vallangoujard in 1843. Assumptions about the incompletement of the bell tower or the absence of north-sides (temporary wooden ? walled ?) highlight the persistent questions about architectural choices. Today, the church, open to worship, remains a testimony of the rural religious heritage of the French Vexin, marked by successive adaptations and a rich artistic symbolism.
