Origin and history

The church of Saint-Michel of Arêches-la-Frasse is a Catholic religious building whose origins date back at least to 1222, when a first church is attested to on this site. This medieval building, although poorly documented, marks the ancient anchor of Christianity in this alpine valley of Haute-Savoie, then under the influence of the Counts of Geneva and the local lords.

Around 1700, the parish community, supported by donations from emigrant faithful, began building a new sanctuary to replace the aging building. The work concluded in 1765, the year of its official consecration on October 6, illustrating the demographic and spiritual vitality of Arêches in modern times. The current architecture thus reflects the Savoyard Baroque styles of the 18th century.

The church is part of a dense religious network in Haute-Savoie, linked to the diocese of Annecy. Its history bears witness to the temporary migrations of its parishioners, whose financial contributions have enabled this reconstruction. Today, it is one of the department's historical monuments, symbolizing both alpine piety and the cross-border cultural exchanges of the time.
