Origin and history

The church of Saint-Pierre de La Peruse, located in the Charente department, is a former Prioral church attached to the Diocese of Limoges. It was consecrated in 1089 and depended on Bourgueil Abbey. Its architecture reflects several periods: the base of the bell tower dates back to the second half of the 11th century, while major restorations were undertaken in the 14th, 18th (1744) and 19th centuries (1895).

The nave, initially divided into four spans by today's missing doubles, is now covered by a panel. The tighter transept had to support a dome replaced by a ceiling. The apse, semicircular on the inside and pentagonal on the outside, is raised by two steps and capped by a cul-de-four. The bell tower, partly ancient, has a modern floor with twin bays and an arrow added during the 19th century works.

The building was listed as historic monuments by order of 28 October 1980. Owned by the municipality of La Peruse, it bears witness to the religious and architectural history of the region, mixing Romanesque, Gothic and modern elements. Its inscription reflects its heritage importance in the landscape of the historical monuments of the Charente.
