Origin and history
The church Saint-Pierre de Loiras is a religious building located in the hamlet of Loiras, on the commune of Bosc, in the department of Hérault in the Occitanie region. It is distinguished by its Romanesque bedside of the 11th or 12th century, composed of a semi-circular apse made of cut stone, partially preserved despite subsequent repairs. The church dominates the landscape with its 14th century rectangular bell tower, pierced by ogival bays and surmounted by a wrought iron campanile.
The history of the church is marked by several phases of construction and modification. The apse and choir, the oldest parts, date from the late 11th or early 12th century. In the 13th century three chapels were added, while the bell tower was erected in the 14th century. The entrance porch, for its part, bears the date of 1611, attesting work to that period. The church is mentioned in a document of 1236 under the name Ecclesia paroecialis S. Petri de Avoiratio, confirming its parish status at that time.
Although Saint Peter's Church is neither classified nor listed as historical monuments, it is listed in the General Inventory of Cultural Heritage under reference IA00029368. Owned by the municipality of Bosc, it illustrates the architectural evolution of rural churches in Occitanie, mixing Romanesque elements and Gothic or post-medieval additions. Its location, in the heart of the hamlet of Loiras, near the departmental road D140 and the creek Merdanson, makes it a central point of this small historical territory.
