Origin and history
The church of Saint-Pierre de Tasque, located in the Gers department in Occitanie, is a Catholic building dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries. It was built from the remains of a Benedictine abbey, whose archives keep little trace. The present Romanesque church presents an imposing nave with a tympanum adorned with Christ surrounded by symbols of the Evangelists and nimbled characters. This tympanum, located to the west, constitutes one of the major artistic elements of the monument.
The history of the church is marked by periods of destruction and reconstruction. Devastated around 1260, it was rebuilt around 1290, before being looted during the Wars of Religion and sacked during the French Revolution. The bedside, redesigned in the 17th and 19th centuries, and the square bell tower erected in 1745 testify to these successive transformations. In 1999, the church and the remains of the neighbouring abbey (including part of the cemetery and an arm of the transept) were classified as Historic Monuments.
In May 2021, the church suffered an act of vandalism during which paintings, retables and statues were damaged or destroyed. These degradations recall the vulnerability of the heritage, despite its protected status. Today, the church belongs to the municipality of Tasque and retains remarkable architectural elements, such as its Romanesque tympanum and traces of its abbatial past, though partial.
