Origin and history

The Sainte-Marie de la Garriga church, also called Sainte Marie du mas de la Garrigue, is a Romanesque building located in the commune of Rivesaltes, in the department of the Pyrénées-Orientales. It is part of a former priory attached to the Saint Martin Abbey of Canigou, most of which have been transformed for contemporary purposes. Only the square-shaped cloister and the church's apse now retain visible traces of their original state.

The building illustrates the medieval religious architecture of the Roussillon, marked by the influence of large regional monasteries such as Saint Martin of Canigou. Although reworked, the church retains typical structural elements of the Romanesque period, such as its apse and the spatial organization of the cloister. These vestiges testify to his past role in a priory, a place of monastic life and spiritual radiance.

No specific dates of construction or milestone event are mentioned in available sources. The church is, however, part of the Romanesque heritage of the Pyrénées-Orientales, listed among the religious buildings of that time. Its history remains closely linked to that of Saint-Martin du Canigou, founder of the priory on which it depended.
