Origin and history

The church of Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais of Saint-Gervais-sous-Meymont came into being in 970, when the tithe of the parish was given to the priory of Cunlhat. In 1270 he handed it over to the Benedictines of Meymont, who, after a fire, moved to Saint-Gervais in 1470. The present building, built in the 15th century, bears witness to this period of reconstruction, marked by the gradual decline of the monastery and the dispersion of the monks before 1789.

The architecture of the church reflects the regional currents of the Livradois, with a vaulted ship, a flat bedside choir, and a two-span nave. A side chapel, accessible by a staircase screw leading to the bell tower, completes this modest but representative rural ensemble. Prior to the Revolution, the cure was attached to that of Chabasse, highlighting local ecclesiastical ties.

Classified as a Historical Monument in 1986, the church now belongs to the commune. Its simple plan and late Gothic elements make it a typical example of small mountain churches, adapted to the spiritual and community needs of the rural populations of Auvergne in the late Middle Ages.
