Origin and history

The church Saint-Michel de La Bastide is a Romanesque religious monument located in the village of the same name. Its architecture and location in the Pyrénées-Orientales are typical of medieval ecclesiastical constructions of this geographical area, marked by strong Catalan influence and a history linked to the Roussillon. Romanesque churches, like La Bastide, played a central role in the life of rural communities in the Middle Ages.

They served not only as a place of worship, but also as a gathering point for the inhabitants, reflecting the social and religious organization of the time. In the Roussillon, these buildings were often constructed of local stone, with stylistic features adapted to the resources and needs of mountain and agricultural populations.
