Origin and history
The church of Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul de Saulx-Marchais, located in the Yvelines in Île-de-France, is a Catholic religious building built in the first quarter of the eighteenth century, specifically between 1718 and 1719. It is distinguished by its architectural unity and its mixture of materials: brick, stone and stone, which evoke a northern influence, probably Dutch, brought by its builder, the brother conversing François Romain. The latter, engineer and inspector of Ponts and Chaussées, designed a building in classic style, but marked by a touch of originality due to its origins.
The western façade of the church is surmounted by a bell tower, once covered with an imperial roof. Inside, composed of a single nave of three spans preceded by a span of bell tower, and a choir of three spans, preserves brick vaults or panels. Some elements of the original decoration remain. The altarpiece includes a painting depicting theological virtues, adding an artistic and spiritual dimension to the building.
The church of Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul was registered as historical monuments by an order of 26 April 1999. This classification recognizes its heritage value, both for its architecture and for its history linked to François Romain. Owned by Saulx-Marchais, it remains an important testimony of the religious and architectural heritage of the Yvelines and Ile-de-France at the beginning of the eighteenth century.
