Origin and history

The church of Saint-Rémy de Vanves, located on Rue de la République in the historic centre of the commune, was consecrated in 1449 by Guillaume Chartier, then bishop of Paris. In a flamboyant Gothic style, it consists of a nave extended by a three-part choir. Part of the nave, as well as painted frescoes, were added in the 19th century, reflecting the architectural transformations of the era. The bell tower, damaged during the War of 1870-1871, was rebuilt in 1874 under the direction of architect Monnier, after partial destruction.

The major restorations of the building, carried out between 2007 and 2009, were divided into two phases: the first concerned external and internal structures, while the second focused on the renovation of murals and stained glass windows. This work was designed to preserve a heritage marked by centuries of history, including an inscription to historical monuments since 1928. The church also houses a contemporary organ, installed in 2013 by the manufacture Kern (Alsace), replacing a 19th century instrument. This organ, blessed in 2014, has 1,429 pipes and weighs 5.5 tons.

The origins of the church date back to a written mention of 1163, linking the site to the abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés in Paris. Although the current building dates mostly from the 15th century, remains of an older medieval church (XII or 13th century) are assumed. In the 18th century, a town hall and a prison were joined to the church, before being demolished around 1848-1849 during restorations led by the architect Nasant. This work included the reconstruction of the first three spans of the nave and bell tower, modified again after 1870.

The parish of Vanves, attested in 1807 with the parish priest Le Valloin, illustrates the central role of the church in local life. Today, the building remains an active place of worship, while at the same time showing architectural and historical developments in the region, conflicts and modern renovations. His organ, frescoes and stained glass windows are a remarkable example of the Franciscan religious heritage.
