The mill of Cassonié, the ruins of its farm and the plot on which they are located, located at the place called Cassonié in the territory of the commune of Cros-de-Géorand, on Parcel No.66, appearing in the cadastre section AP: inscription by order of April 16, 2018.
Origin and history
The Cassonié mill, located at Cassonié in the commune of Cros-de-Géorand (Ardèche), is a cereal mill built in the 19th century. It was mainly used to grind wheat, barley and rye, and remained active until the 1950s. Its mechanism, operated by a lock fed by a nearby source, made it a central element of local agricultural activity. The building, with a genet roof, still houses its original wheels on the ground floor and a storage space on the first floor.
The mill is the last witness to the historic activity of the site, now reduced to its ruins and to an agricultural plot. Its evacuation channel, semi-entered, directed water to the waterworks of the adjoining farm. Since 2018, the mill and the remains of its farm have been protected as historical monuments, including cadastral plot no.66.
Architecturally, the mill is distinguished by its plant cover in june, a traditional technique adapted to local resources. Its inscription in the heritage reflects its importance as a preserved example of the ardèche rural mills, linked to the cereal economy and pre-industrial hydraulic management. No information is available on potential owners or millers of its history.
