Origin and history
The island of La Motte, on Lake Ilay, is a historic monument located in the municipality of La Chaux-du-Dombief, in the department of Jura (39). This site, which has been listed in the Historical Monuments Inventory since 1991, includes an island and a protected lake platform within a 200-metre radius around its banks. Although its exact period of construction or use is not specified in the available sources, its status as a protected monument suggests an archaeological or heritage significance recognized by the authorities.
Lacustrine platforms, such as that of the island of La Motte, are often associated with ancient human occupations, sometimes dating back to prehistory or antiquity. In Jura, a region marked by lakes and wetlands, these structures could be used as habitats, places of refuge or ritual sites. The protection of this monument indicates that it represents a significant vestige to understand the lifestyles and construction techniques of local populations in a remote era.
The location on Lake Ilay, near a commune such as La Chaux-du-Dombief, could also reflect the exploitation of surrounding natural resources, such as fishing or agriculture on the banks.
