Origin and history
The site of the Jewish Tower, located in Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux in the Drôme, is an architectural vestige of the 15th century, marked by the history of local religious communities. This Jewish quarter, founded in the 13th century, illustrates the coexistence between Catholics, Protestants and Jews. The tower and adjacent house, although redesigned after the occupation by Christian families in the 15th century, retain significant elements such as an elevated stair tower and remains of the original home. These changes reflect the demographic and cultural changes in the city.
A local legend, not confirmed by archives, evokes the presence of the Ark of Alliance in the Castellane house in the eighteenth century. However, no document validates this hypothesis, which remains a mysterious anecdote. On the architectural level, the whole, although lacunary, testifies to the urban evolution of Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux. The Jewish Tower and its adjacent buildings, protected since 2011, form an island listed as Historic Monuments, highlighting their heritage importance.
The location of the Ilot at 4 Rue Juiverie and its current state reflect a geographical accuracy deemed "passible" (note 5/10). Owned by the commune, this historical ensemble offers an overview of the social and religious dynamics that shaped the region. The legal protections cover the entire tower, the facades of neighbouring buildings and the associated plot, guaranteeing the preservation of this emblematic heritage of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
