Origin and history

The Maison de l'Armateur is a neoclassical residence built in Le Havre between 1790 and 1800 according to the plans of Paul-Michel Thibault, municipal architect. The latter, also responsible for the city's fortifications and fountains, designed a five-level building, organized around an octagonal light well. The sober facade hides richly decorated interiors, reflecting the social status of its owners: separate stairs for masters and domestics, exotic wooden floors, and rooms dedicated to receptions, work or leisure.

Acquired in 1800 by Martin-Pierre Foäche, a shipowner from a dynasty of negrarian traders, the house became his winter residence and office. The building will later house the hotel of Helvetia (mid-19th century), then the family of Arras until 1955. Saved by the 1944 bombings that razed 80% of Le Havre, it was classified as a historic monument in 1950 and purchased by the city. Its architecture and intact decor make it a rare vestige of the pre-industrial city.

Since 2006, the Maison de l'Armateur has been a museum presenting collections of decorative art (furnished, paintings, 18th-18th century objects), including portraits of the Foäche family by Alexandre Roslin. A room addresses the slave trade, a controversial theme: associations such as Memoirs & Shares criticize the reduced place given to this past. In response, the city of Le Havre announced in 2019 the creation of a space dedicated to the Dubocage Museum in Bléville for 2026.

The building also illustrates the architectural techniques of the era: mirrors to optically enlarge the rooms, wrought iron staircase for owners, and wooden staircase "to the screws of Saint-Gilles" for servants. Exotic wood floors (five species) and woodwork highlight the pleasure of shipowners, while the library and cabinet of curiosities reveal their openness to the world, linked to their transatlantic commercial activities.
