Origin and history

The building of the Mouret chapel, located at 20 rue des Marchands in Avignon, dates from the second half of the 19th century. It houses a chapel shop founded in 1860, which became "Chambrerie Mouret" in 1923. The façade and the street-side roof were listed as historical monuments on 10 May 1991, while the shop, its wooden front and its staff decoration (dated 1886-1893) were classified on 12 October 1995. The present front, made in 1895, bears witness to the craftsmanship of the period.

The chapelry, always run by the same family for three generations, illustrates the continuity of artisanal know-how in the city centre of Avignon. Its interior decoration, typical of the late 19th century, and its wooden frontage are remarkable examples of French commercial heritage. The building is representative of the urban buildings of this period, combining commercial function and neat architecture.

The successive protections (registration in 1991, ranking in 1995) underline the heritage value of this ensemble, both for its architecture and for its uninterrupted use since 1860. The Mouret chapel remains a living testimony to the artisanal and commercial history of Avignon, integrated into the city's urban landscape.
