Origin and history

The Kichenin House is an emblematic residence located in the heart of Saint-Denis, capital of the island of La Réunion. Built between the second half of the 18th century and the first half of the 19th century, it illustrates the Creole architectural style of the colonial elites of the time. Its location at 42 rue La Bourdonnais, in the city centre, reflects its historical and social importance.

Classified in the additional inventory of the Historic Monuments by order of 28 December 1984, the house is distinguished by its protected elements: facades, roofs, entrance gate, as well as its garden and fountain. These characteristics make it a valuable testimony of the bourgeois habitation of Réunion during the Old Regime and the post-revolutionary period. Official protection underscores its exceptional heritage value.

Available sources, including the Merimée and Monumentum bases, confirm its status as a historical monument and specify its exact address, linked to the Insee 97411 code of the municipality of Saint-Denis. The Kichenin House thus embodies the built heritage of Réunion, mixing European and local influences in an island context marked by French colonial history.
