Origin and history
The building at 5 rue des Lauriers in Saint-Malo is a 17th-century building, integrated into the original enclosure of the Malouine city. Its architecture reflects the urban heritage of this period, marked by strong port and commercial activity. The street façade, classified by decree of 27 February 1946, bears witness to the historical importance of this area of the city.
The rue des Lauriers, formerly known as rue de la Harpe, is part of a medieval district, remodelled over the centuries. In the modern era, Saint-Malo was a strong place and a dynamic port, where buildings such as this served both housing and activities related to maritime commerce. Their preservation makes it possible today to understand the urban and social evolution of coastal Brittany.
The inscription of the façade as a historic monument in 1946 underscores its heritage value, although information on its precise use or historical occupants remains scarce. Available sources, such as the Merimée and Monumentum base, confirm its protected status but do not detail its history beyond its construction and location in the primitive enclosure.
