Origin and history

The building at 9 Montaigne Street in Sarlat-la-Canéda is a civil building dating from the first half of the 16th century, typical of Renaissance architecture. It is distinguished by its triangular pediment portal, decorated with original woodwork, which bears witness to the artisanal know-how of the time. This gate, located on the rue de l'Ancienne-Poste, is the only protected element of the building, inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 23 August 1946.

The location of the building, in the historic centre of Sarlat-la-Canéda (Dordogne), is located in an area marked by a dense medieval and Renaissance heritage. The city, known for its preserved architecture, attests to a period of prosperity linked to trade and the royal administration under Francis I. The buildings of that time often served as housing for local notables or wealthy merchants, reflecting their social status through decorative elements such as carved portals.

Today, the building does not seem open to the public for regular visits, and available sources (Monumentum, Merimée base) do not mention any specific current use (guestrooms, reception room), nor systematic access. The accuracy of its geolocation is considered fair (note 5/10), with an approximate address indicated as 7 rue Montaigne in GPS data, slightly different from the registered official address (9 rue Montaigne).
