Facade and roof on the square (Box B 64): inscription by decree of 24 October 1973

Origin and history

The building currently occupied by a clinic in Cognac dates from the 18th century. It was erected on the site of the old medieval halls, marking a transition between medieval times and classical urban planning. Its facade, of classical inspiration, is characterized by a regularity of openings and a balanced elevation, typical of the civil architecture of this period. The ornamental details, such as the balcony with curved lines above the front door, as well as the consoles supporting the allegations of the windows, underline the care given to its design.

The windows on the first floor have rounded allegations, while the windows on the second floor are straight, reflecting a visual hierarchy between the levels. The façade and the roof, overlooking the Place des Anciens-Halles, were protected by a decree of inscription under the title of Historical Monuments on 24 October 1973. This building thus illustrates the urban evolution of Cognac, where medieval structures have gradually given way to more modern buildings, while preserving traces of their past.

The location of the building, in 9 Place des Anciens-Halles, recalls its historical link with the trade and public life of the city. Today, although transformed into a clinic, the building retains significant architectural elements, demonstrating its heritage importance. The accuracy of its location is considered satisfactory, and its exact address is documented in the Merimée base, confirming its anchoring in Cognac's urban fabric.
