Origin and history

The building at 1 rue du Havre in Mulhouse, Haut-Rhin, is a historic monument registered since 1986. Built during the 2nd quarter of the 19th century, it illustrates the civil architecture of this period in the Mulhousian region. Its location, at the corner of Rue du Havre and Rue du Maréchal-Joffre, makes it an important part of the local urban heritage.

The facades and roofs of the building, as well as its return to the adjacent street, were protected by ministerial decree in July 1986. The owners identified are Jean-Geoffroy Stotz and architect Félix Fries, two figures associated with the construction of this building. Although little documented, this monument reflects the architectural and urban evolution of Mulhouse in the 19th century, a period marked by industrialization and population growth.

Mulhouse, an Alsatian city integrated into the Great East, experienced an important economic boom in the 19th century, thanks to its textile industry. The buildings of that time, like the one on Rue du Havre, often served as dwellings for bourgeois classes or as mixed spaces combining housing and professional activities. Their preservation today allows us to understand the way of life and the architectural aspirations of this changing society.
