Origin and history
The building at 6 Place de la République in Mulhouse is a historic monument registered since 1986. Built during the 2nd quarter of the 19th century, it is distinguished by its representative architecture of this period in the Mulhousian region. The building also extends to 18-20 rue du Maréchal-Joffre and Rue Poincaré, making it an important urban element in the city centre.
The facades and roofs of the building, as well as their return to the adjacent streets, were protected by ministerial decree on 9 July 1986. This classification specifically concerns architectural elements visible from public space, highlighting their heritage value. The building is now owned by a private company, which limits its accessibility to the public while ensuring its preservation.
Two major figures are associated with his construction: Jean Geoffroy Stotz, master of work, and Félix Fries, architect. Their collaboration allowed us to create a building that embodies the 19th century local architectural know-how. Although the available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) do not provide comprehensive details of its history, the building remains an important testimony of the Mulhousian heritage, integrated into a central district of the city.
The location of the building, both on the Place de la République and close to adjacent streets, reflects its role in the town planning of Mulhouse in the 19th century. At that time, the city, which was then in full industrial expansion, saw the development of buildings intended to house commercial, residential or administrative activities. This type of building contributed to the structuring of public and private spaces, thus marking the social and economic development of the region.
The 1986 classification is part of a broader desire to preserve the architectural traces of the periods of urban growth in Alsace. Mulhouse, in particular, underwent a significant transformation of its landscape built during the 19th century, with both local and external influences. The building in 6 Place de la République is a concrete example, although the available archives do not allow to trace its detailed history or its successive occupants.
