Origin and history

The Bargoin building, located 27 Ballainvilliers Street in Clermont-Ferrand, was built in the late 19th century for botanist pharmacist Bargoin. Designed by the architect Tachet, it illustrates a successful synthesis of its decorative and stylistic recipes. The building consists of two quadrangular houses separated by an inner courtyard, accessible via a covered passage adorned with classic stucco. This passage serves a stairwell and a carved heal, rare element perhaps housing a cellar descent or a closet.

The street façade is distinguished by two Corinthian columns surrounding the door, surmounted by a frieze-like entanglement of interlaces. On the first floor, the central span is highlighted by composite columns supporting a curved pediment. The windows on the first two floors are covered with cornices with volute consoles, typical of the Clermontian architecture of the time. The staircase vestibule resumes this classic ordinance, while the ensemble, protected since 1992, embodies the climax of the art of Tachet.

Protected elements include facades, roofs, covered passage and the first stairwell with its curate. This building, owned by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, bears witness to the local architectural know-how and the influence of wealthy sponsors, such as Bargoin, on the urban heritage of Clermont-Ferrand. The accuracy of its location is considered fair (note 5/10), and its official address remains 27 Ballainvilliers Street.
