Origin and history
The Danielle-Casanova building, located on Danielle-Casanova Avenue in Ivry-sur-Seine, is a historic monument built between 1970 and 1972. It is part of the renovation of the city centre, coordinated by Renée Gailhoustet from 1962. The building, designed by the architect Jean Renaudie, marks a break with urban planning on slab by favouring a complex and organic urban fabric, alternating housing, shops and offices.
The building is distinguished by its structure in steps, evoking a pyramid or a hill, and a diagonal geometry that diversifys the orientations and plans of the 82 apartments. Each dwelling is extended by planted terraces, seeking a compromise between collective and individual housing. This project, first realized by Renaudie in his own name after his departure from the Montrouge workshop, prefigures his future achievements as the Jeanne-Hachette centre in Ivry or the ensemble of Givors.
The facades, roofs, terraces, galleries on the ground floor and the garden of the building were protected by a registration order in April 2021. The building illustrates the plastic power and space innovations dear to Renaudie, while integrating into a neighborhood marked by towers and bars, such as the city Maurice-Thorez or the Lenin tower.
The building is located in a dense urban environment, between the media library, the Danielle-Casanova Tower and the city of the Park. Its location, at 79-81 Danielle-Casanova Avenue, makes it a central element of the architectural landscape of Ivry-sur-Seine, reflecting the social and aesthetic ambitions of the 1970s in terms of collective housing.
