Origin and history

The Art Nouveau report building of Sens, built in 1907, illustrates the architectural innovation of its era through the use of the armed stone process. This material, combining concrete and trimstone, allows a structure that is both solid and aesthetic. The building is distinguished by an imposing base topped by a balustrade, two floors pierced with large bays, and a richly decorated attic with a metallic balustrade. The facades, classified as Historic Monument in 2013, feature two advances adorned with bas-reliefs typical of the Belle Époque and Art Nouveau style, reflecting decorative exuberance of this period.

The location of the building, at 2 boulevard de Maupéou in Sens (Yonne), makes it an urban testimony of bourgeois architecture of the early twentieth century in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Its architect, Georges-Léon Richardot, has designed a building with a combination of functionality (rental housing) and art, with carved elements evoking floral and organic motifs dear to Art Nouveau. Official protection in 2013 specifically concerns facades and roofs, highlighting their heritage value.

The building is part of a historical context marked by industrialization and urban growth, where reporting buildings meet the growing demand for housing. In Sens, a city with a rich medieval past, this building symbolizes modernity and aesthetic renewal that contrast with ancient heritage. Its state of conservation and location, noted as "passable" (5/10) in databases, make it a notable architectural landmark, photographed and documented under Creative Commons license.
