Origin and history
The Sainte-Jeanne d'Arc Chapel, called the Jeanne d'Arc Hall, is a religious building built in 1943 in Saint-André, on the island of La Réunion. Located at 16 rue du Père-Buschère, it is conceived as a large room of works intended for the ancillary activities of the church, reflecting the commitment of local priests and workers to its realization. Its stone walls and its initial shingle roof, replaced after the 1948 cyclone by a sheet metal roof, testify to the construction techniques of the time. Construction, begun during World War II, was interrupted due to lack of resources, leaving a unique architectural vestige.
The building is fully registered with the Historic Monuments on January 26, 2012, recognizing its heritage value. In April 2018, he suffered major damage during the passing of Cyclone Fakir, losing his roof. This damage led to its inclusion in the Heritage mission in 2023, aimed at financing its restoration. The Jeanne d'Arc Hall thus embodies both the religious history of La Réunion and the contemporary challenges of preserving heritage in the face of climatic hazards.
Owned by the commune of Saint-André, this building is a rare example of religious architecture from the mid-20th century in the overseas departments. Its inscription as a historic monument and its selection for the Heritage mission underline its cultural and architectural importance to the island. The Jeanne d'Arc Hall remains a symbol of the resilience and adaptation of local communities to natural disasters and economic constraints.
