La Galerie Renaissance (cad. H 1498) : inscription by decree of 29 November 1948

Origin and history

The building in Bergerac, dating from the 16th century, is distinguished by its wooden gallery covered with a pendant roof, characteristic of the Renaissance. This structure is based on two ionic columns and has chevron-shaped bricks, a model not widely used in the region. The building thus illustrates the influence of Italian architectural currents in Aquitaine at that time, while adapting local techniques such as brick use.

The Renaissance Gallery (cadastre H 1498) was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 29 November 1948, recognizing its heritage value. Owned by a private company, the building is located at the corner of Doublet Square and Cayla Square, although its approximate GPS address is located at 4 Rue du Port. The accuracy of its location is considered passable (note 5/10), possibly reflecting urban modifications after its construction.

No information is available on its current use (visits, rentals, guest rooms) or on any historical owners. The sources are limited to Monumentum data and Merimée archives, without mention of sponsors or artisans who participated in its realization. The lack of details about its original social or functional history allows questions to be raised about its precise role in the Bergerac of the Renaissance, then dynamic city thanks to its port on the Dordogne.
