Façade on the square, façade under arcade, arcade and roof (cad. 203): inscription by decree of 12 October 1946
Origin and history
The building located Place de la République in Beaucaire is part of an ancient architectural complex, formerly at the heart of the city's commercial life. This square, successively called Place du Marché, Place Vieille then Place de la République, was bordered by arcades on two sides. In 1775, some of these arcades were demolished to facilitate access to the square, leaving only three very low arches, resting on large piles. These arcades now support three floors of housing, some of which have retained their original carpentry with small tiles and wrought iron supports.
In the centre of the square were once a well and a monumental cross, now missing without trace. The facades under arcades, as well as the arcades themselves and the roof, were protected by a registration order under the Historic Monuments on 12 October 1946. This set, although partially modified, offers a testimony to Beaucaire's urban heritage and its evolution throughout the centuries.
The precise location of the building, at 1 Place de la République, corresponds to the code Insee 30032, in the department of Gard. Geographical accuracy is estimated to be poor (note 5/10), but the official address remains the one referenced in the Merimée database. The protected elements specifically include the facade on the square, the arcade facades, the arcades themselves and the roof, identified in the cadastre under parcel 203.
