Façade on the square, façade under arcade, arcade and roof (cad. 205): inscription by decree of 12 October 1946

Origin and history

The building located Place de la République in Beaucaire is part of an ancient architectural complex, formerly in the heart of a Market Square. This square, successively renamed Place Vieille then Place de la République, was bordered by arcades on two sides. In 1775, a part of these arcades was demolished to facilitate access to the square, leaving only three remaining arcades, very low and resting on large piles.

In the centre of the square were once a well and a monumental cross, now missing. The remaining arcades support three residential floors, some of which have retained their original carpentry with small tiles and wrought iron supports. These elements, as well as the facades and roof, were protected by a registration order in 1946.

The precise address of the building is the 2 place of the Republic, in the department of Gard (30), in the Occitan region. The GPS location is approximate, with an accuracy considered fair. The ensemble, although partially modified, offers testimony to Beaucaire's urban heritage and its architectural evolution.
