Façade on the square, facade under arcade, arcade and roof (cad. 204): inscription by decree of 12 October 1946
Origin and history
The building located Place de la République in Beaucaire is part of an architectural complex linked to the old market square, successively renamed Place Vieille and then Place de la République. This place, once surrounded by arcades on two sides, underwent major transformations in 1775, when some structures were demolished to facilitate access to the place. At the centre was a well and a monumental cross, now missing without trace.
The three remaining arcades, very low and resting on large piles, support facades housing three residential floors. Some bays have retained their original carpentry with small tiles as well as wrought iron supports, reflecting the architectural style of the era. These elements, protected by a decree of 12 October 1946, form a picturesque group classified as a Historical Monument.
The place, once Beaucaire's economic and social heart, reflected the urban organization typical of Languedoc's commercial cities. The arcades probably served as shelter for traders and passers-by, while the upper floors were dedicated to housing. The inscription of facades and roofs in 1946 highlights their heritage value in the historical landscape of the Occitanie region.
