Origin and history
This small private hotel, located 17 rue Notre-Dame in Nîmes, is a representative example of the suburban buildings built in the 18th century. It is part of the subdivisions created on former agricultural land, notably that of the central suburb, called Baron l'Aigremont, built between 1774 and 1777. The latter was the largest of the three main Nîmes estates of the time, with facade alignments along Notre-Dame Street.
The street façade is distinguished by its three bays per floor and its right balcony decorated with floral motifs. The first floor features a central flag panel, framed with interlaced pilasters and volutes in S, with sheet metal daisies. An axial passage leads to a narrow inner courtyard, lined with communication galleries. The gallery on courtyard, supported by three sculpted key arches, has a ironwork marrying the curves of the plane, with a convex central panel connected by symmetrical volutes.
The second floor also has a narrower and straighter gallery. The protected elements include the two wrought iron balconies (on street and on courtyard), inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 12 March 1964. This building bears witness to the gradual urbanization of Nîmes in the Enlightenment century, mixing functionality and decoration characteristic of southern civil architecture.
Available sources (Monumentum, Merimée database) confirm its exact address and Insee code (30189), in the Gard department. The GPS location corresponds to Notre-Dame Street, although its accuracy is considered satisfactory a priori (note 6/10).
