Origin and history

The building located at 40 rue de la Porte-de-France in Nîmes occupies the location of a house with a certified garden since 1671. The plot was later divided, as the present building, built in the 18th century, is smaller in size. It consists of two floors on the ground floor, each illuminated by three bays, and is distinguished by an entrance door framed with ionic pilasters decorated with vegetal and geometric motifs.

The door, dated from the 18th century, presents carved vantals of stylized branches and fruits, surmounted by an openwork imposte in wrought iron decorated with a wooden shell. Its interior frame has splits, while the arch key in the middle is carved into a console. Above it, a multured entanglement supports a straight balcony whose ironwork, consisting of a medallion central panel and rolled volutes, is a remarkable example of the local craftsmanship of the period.

The building was partially protected by an order of 27 February 1964, specifically covering the street door and its wrought iron balcony. These elements, classified as Historic Monuments, illustrate the architectural and decorative know-how of the 18th century in Nîmes, a period marked by urban growth and artistic embellishment in the region. The sculptural details, such as ionic capitals or roses, reflect the influence of classical models adapted to the scale of a bourgeois home.

The location of the building, in a historic street of Nîmes, highlights its integration into a changing urban fabric, where private residences adopted increasingly elaborate decors. The accuracy of the current location is considered passable (note 5/10), indicating relative uncertainty about its exact location in available sources.

Sources also mention an approximate address from GPS coordinates (40 Rue Porte de France), although the official address recorded at the Mérimée base remains the rue de la Porte-de-France. This duality reflects the toponymic adjustments that have occurred over the centuries in the city.

No information is available on the current use of the building (visit, rental, etc.) or on any historic owners or sponsors. The data are limited to architectural descriptions and partial heritage protection granted in 1964.
