Origin and history

The building 2 Place de la Bourse in Bordeaux is a building representative of 18th century civil architecture. It is part of a coherent urban complex, marked by the classical elegance of this period, and is part of the monumental landscape of the city, then in full economic growth thanks to the maritime and wine trade. The Place de la Bourse, the symbolic heart of Bordeaux, concentrates several private hotels and administrative buildings, reflecting the prestige of the bourgeoisie and local institutions.

The façade and roofs of this building were classified as Historic Monument by decree of 22 December 1916, highlighting their early heritage value. In 2019 and 2020, new protections were added: the unprotected parts of the surrounding buildings were registered (16 July 2019), then the architectural ensemble of the Place de la Bourse, including the Hotel de la Douane and the Hotel de la Bourse, was classified (19 February 2020). These measures illustrate the desire to preserve the integrity of this emblematic site, now owned by a private company.

The building is integrated into an urban context marked by commerce and administration. In the 18th century, Bordeaux, a dynamic port open on the Atlantic, attracts merchants, shipowners and financiers. Buildings around the Stock Exchange Square, such as this one, often housed activities related to customs, commodity exchanges or wealthy residences. Their architecture, both functional and ostentatious, bears witness to this prosperity, while serving as a showcase for the economic and political power of the city.

The available coordinates indicate two close addresses: one official (2 place de la Bourse), the other approximate (3 place Gabriel), perhaps reflecting toponymic evolutions or localization inaccuracies. Map accuracy is estimated to be "passible" (note 5/10), suggesting margins of uncertainty about its exact location. Despite this, the building remains a major landmark of the Bordeaux heritage, associated with the image of the square, today a tourist place and symbol of the city.

No information is provided on its current use (visits, rental, accommodation), or on any historical figures related to its construction or occupation. Private ownership of the site probably limits public access, although its immediate environment, such as the Place de la Bourse, is widely open and valued.
