Origin and history

The building located 1 square of the Parliament in Bordeaux is part of an architectural complex of the eighteenth century, marked by a homogeneous and elegant order. The square, formerly called Place du Marché Royal, forms an irregular quadrilateral where each building has a commercial ground floor, two noble floors and a third attic treatise. The set, crowned with a balustrade cornice and an attic, is entirely constructed of cut stone, with carved details like masks and shells adorning the keys of yousures. All windows are equipped with wrought iron balconies, typical of the Bordeaux craftsmanship of the time.

The building was built precisely in 1754, integrating into a coherent urban project for the square. The facades and roofs, including their return to Ferdinand-Philippart Street, were classified as Historic Monument by order of 17 April 1952, highlighting their heritage value. The exact address, 1 place of Parliament (33000 Bordeaux), corresponds to the code Insee 33063 of the commune, in the department of Gironde, in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine.

The architecture reflects the aesthetic codes of the Enlightenment in Bordeaux, a period when the city, enriched by maritime and wine-making trade, has special places and hotels symbolizing its prestige. The wrought iron balconies, carved decorations and cut stone illustrate the influence of local artisans and architects inspired by Parisian models, while adapting regional materials. The place of Parliament, the historic heart, thus embodies the Bordeaux golden age, between economic prosperity and urban ambition.
